Who and what

The woodls

A woodl is one machine. Its species says what it is; its state says what it’s doing.

Read from shape

The silhouette, the sprout and the bark say which machine it is.

Who: three species

SpeciesThe machineHow to tell it
A birch woodl: tall, with one leaf on top and dark dashes on its bark.BirchA Mac with Apple siliconTall, one leaf, dark dashes
A pine woodl: a cone shape with scales.PineA PC with an NVIDIA cardA cone with scales
An oak woodl: round and wide, with an oak leaf and furrowed bark.OakAny computer without either, CPU onlyRound and wide, an oak leaf, furrows

An always-on machine, which comes later COMING, is any species wearing a small fir crown instead of its sprout: an evergreen.

Read from pose

Each state has a pose, a face and one signal, and the terminal prints the same face.

What: five states

The drawingFaceWhat it’s doing
A birch woodl standing on its lit roots, seeds ripening at the tips.(o_o)Working. Serving a job while you’re away; seeds ripen at its roots.
A birch woodl sitting beside its roots.(-_-)Resting. You touched the machine, so it stepped off its roots. The model stays loaded.
A birch woodl curled up asleep.(u_u)Dormant. A game or video app needed the GPU, so it let the model go.
A birch woodl hopping, holding up a seed.(^_^)Done. It finished something for you, such as opening your account.
A birch woodl fallen over, with x eyes.(x_x)Stopped. Something went wrong; the terminal says what, and what to do.

Every drawing has to pass the silhouette test: filled in solid, with no face and no bark, it still has to read. That’s why a resting woodl sits, a dormant one curls up, and a stopped one falls over.

These are code drafts. Before launch an illustrator redraws them by hand, keeping the shapes, the faces and the test.

Your machine

Pick it, and see its night.

Meet yours

  1. A birch woodl standing on lit roots.23:00You leave. It steps onto its roots and serves other people’s requests. (o_o)
  2. A birch woodl hopping, holding up a seed.01:12A job finishes. A seed ripens at its roots. (^_^)
  3. A birch woodl sitting beside its roots.02:40You come back for a glass of water and touch the keyboard. It steps aside in 47 to 151 ms (our tests, one Mac) and keeps the model loaded. (-_-)
  4. A birch woodl curled up asleep.02:44You open a game. It lets the model go, 4.9 s after the game began loading the graphics chip in our test, and sleeps. (u_u)

The times are an example night. The pause, the release and the five minutes are what we measured, on one MacBook Pro, on 26 September 2026. If something goes wrong, it falls over (x_x) and the terminal says what to do.
