The definition

Forest computing is AI run by ordinary computers in people’s homes, lent while their owners are away. We call it that as others say cloud computing: the computers are a forest of homes, joined by roots.

A city skyline at night drawn in white lines, windows lit, with thin roots running between the buildings.
Plate I A forest of computers A city at night: every lit window a computer, joined by roots.

Roots, seeds, rings

The words come from what the network does.

Why a forest

The computers are joined by roots, the network’s links. Each finished job ripens a seed. Every seed is written into rings that only grow. And it’s always night somewhere, so somewhere a computer is free.

woodls

Always lower case.

The name in full

The woodls wordmark over the city, with a word under each letter: web, of, our, devices, lending, spare time.
Plate II The name Each letter drawn down to its word: a web of our devices, lending spare time.

woodls: a web of our devices, lending spare time.

Limits

  • Today the Forest runs open-source models that fit on one good computer.
  • The computer that answers can read your request.
  • Seeds pay for AI on the network and never become cash.
